that it contained nothing which should induce
the Trade to abandon their proceedings agt
Downie. – It appeared to the Meeting that
his Case differed in a very essential point
from that of McKenna – inasmuch as the
Latter was himself a discharged Soldier, and
carrying on the Trade for himself directly; –
Whereas Downie was not a Soldier, and
was carrying on business under cover of his Wifes
name. – It also appeared to the Meeting that
the Court had expressed themselves in such a
manner as to discountenance any collusive device
to communicate ^to others^ the privilege ~[?]~ competent
to Soldiers under the Acts. – The Meeting
therefore appointed the Ordinary Council of
the Trade to attend at the Judicial Exa

Dundee 19th Septr 1828
At a meeting of the Trade for the purpose
of providing a Candidate from the Trade to
be Convener of the Nine Trades for the ensuing year
after taking the usual Oaths against Bribery & corrup
tion & resolved to propose David Clarke Tailor in
Dundee as a Candidate, but the Dekon was instructed
to Vote in Common Hall for James Small from
the Bonnet Makers as Convener, but the Election
was carried in favour of Mr Wm Roberts, a deputation
having been sent to him to anounce his Election
he declined to acct, & the trades again return
to there room & made up another leet, &
