Dundee 28th April 1828
At a meeting of the Trade in their Hall, the Deacon
intimated that the meeting had been called for the
purpose of considering the Defences given in for James
Downie to the action raised agt him at the instance of
the Deacon & Boxmaster ~of the~ for encroaching on the
privileges of the Trade, and for giving their agent instructions
for carrying on the action.
The Defences being read to the meeting they
appointed the present Councillors Thomas Peter, James
Webster Deacon Malcom and Convener Young, along with
John Young as a Committee for procuring evidence of
the encroachments, and it was recommended to the
other members of the Trade to use their exertions in
assisting the Committee in discharging this duty – The
Committee to report quam primum. – And in the
meantime the Agents for the Trades were instructed to
give in Replies to the defences, if they shall be forced in
before the Committee make their report, offering a proof
generally of their libel. –

The Agent reported to the Trade that he had
precognosed several of the Witnesses who are pro-
posed to be examined in the Question with James
Downie. and in consequence thereof had lodged
in Court a Condescendence of the leading facts founded
upon by the Trade. after having laid it before the
Deacon –
The Meeting instructed the Box Master to pay
~a~ to Widow A McDonald, ~and~ and Widow
Lamb One pound Each – & four Shillings monthly
till Marts. next. and to cancel the Claim for
the sums hitherto advanced them. Also to pay
