Dundee 15 May 1829
At a meeting of the Trade held in their Hall this day
the case of James Murison Clothier in Dundee, who intends
carrying on the Taylor Trade by means of a Journeyman
or Foreman was stated and considered and a letter from
him offering to enter with the Trade and pay the dues
was read to the meeting; after which they authorised Adamson
& Shaw Writers in Dundee their agents to write to the Deacon
of the Tailor Trade of Perth for information as to the case of
the Tailor Trade of that Burgh agt. Malcom Stewart
Merchant there decided some years ago – and to the
Deacon of the Tailor Trade of Aberdeen for information as
to the case of the Tailor Trade of that Burgh against
Simpson & Whyte Merchants in Aberdeen – And the
Trade also resolved that Counsel should be consulted
after getting the information from Perth and Aberdeen
whether the Trade are entitled to reject Mr Murison
on account of his not having been bred or instructed
in the Tailor Craft or otherwise capable of performing
with his own hands the manipulations of the Craft –
qualifications which the Trade have always considered
as indispensable to the admission of members by requiring
and obtaining from all applicants an Essay piece, and
approving of the same before admission.
